Schlage Door Latch Won’t Retract
If your Schlage door is doing trouble while locking and isn’t latched properly, the reason behind this issue might be the strike plate being misaligned. This usually happens because of the door shift caused by the weight of the Schlage door over the period of time. Here are some quick fixes that will help you troubleshoot this problem. For this process, you will be needing a screwdriver, led pencil, lipstick, hammer, and a metal file.
1. Tighten all screws
First of all, take a screwdriver and tighten all the screws on the door lock. After tightening the screws satisfy yourself properly by closing the door several times. If your Schlage door still does not latch properly move to the next step.
2. Use the lipstick hack
Take an old lipstick and apply it to the end of the bolt of the lock. Once you are done with applying the lipstick, close the door and take a metal file. With that metal file, file the corners of the strike plate a bit to remove the excess lipstick from the plate. Check the Schlage door again by closing it several times. Hopefully, the door will now latch properly. If unfortunately the door still doesn’t latch properly we have still got your back. Let us move to another step.
3. Fix the strike plate
The next step is a bit tricky. You will have to remove all the screws that fix the strike plate in the frame of the Schlage door. Now check if the bolt of the lock is on its position or not. It might have hit the strike plate way high and way low or maybe very off the position. If this is the case, take a led pencil mark the area where the bolt of the lock is striking the frame of the door.
4. Align the Schlage door latch with the strike plate
The alignment of the Schlage door latch with the hole in the strike plate is very important. If the alignment is not on point the door will keep causing trouble in latching. The misalignment is very easy to detect at times but the other times when it is not the lipstick does its magic and makes the misalignment clear to you. As we have identified the point of misalignment by this point let us move to the next step.
5. Use the hammer to enlarge the hole
Take a chisel and place its tip inside the hole in the strike plate. Once placed, strike it carefully with the hammer and make the hole a bit wider. Once the hole is enlarged try to accommodate a new location for the strike plate. Once it is done fix the strike plate on a certain position on the frame of the door with the help of the screwdrivers. Tighten it efficiently and nicely. The door will not do any more trouble.
This is not big trouble and you can easily fix it without waiting for plumbers or carpenters to come to your house and charge you for such an easy task. It usually happens because of a continuous door slamming over the period of time and is pretty common. No big deal at all as now you can fix it anytime.
