Sengled Bulbs are a liked option for those that want to have smart lighting without spending too much money. Many like them because of their low price and because one can connect them directly to the home Wi-Fi network without needing a hub. Just install the bulb like you would a normal one and connect it to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
That ease attracted many users.
Sengled Bulbs: Cheap and Easy to Use but Can Have Problems
Sengled offers various kinds of bulbs. Among them are Wi-Fi bulbs, Zigbee bulbs and Bluetooth Mesh bulbs. Also, one finds here light strips and starter sets.
Some bulbs can change colour, while others let you dim the light. The colour-changing bulbs have A19 E26 size and give around 800 lumens which is like a 60-watt standard bulb. There are even dual control smart bulbs that let you change the colour temperature turning from cool and bright light at midday to warm and relaxing tones at night.
Sengled Bulbs come in various forms. One has A19, BR30, candelabra form and strips, and many of them are RGBW, which means that they can produce red, green, blue and white light.
The S1 bulb connects automatically with Alexa devices through Bluetooth Mesh. Through the Amazon Alexa app you can switch bulbs on and off, dim or increase their brightness, set routines and schedules. They work well with Amazon Echo devices and fit for parties, entertainment or everyday usage.
Some bulbs work also with Google Home. The Wi-Fi colour bulb is controlled through phone or voice without need of a hub, and it costs relatvely little.
But Sengled met some real troubles. Their service went down several times, and Amazon sent warnings that Sengled had outages that could affect devices connected through Wi-Fi. Many users did not know that the Wi-Fi bulbs require that the servers of Sengled stay online to work.
When those servers stopped, the bulbs became useless. Also the Sengled app went down, which left owners of Wi-Fi bulbs without ability to act.
The Zigbee bulbs seem safer. They require a hub like SmartThings or Echo with built-in hub, but do not depend on Sengled servers. Some folks managed to connect their Sengled Bulbs to SmartThings and recover there working with Alexa that way.
After everything is set up through Alexa, there is no real need to use the Sengled app. For more complete control of smart homes, better get a hub like SmartThings or Google Assistant.
The Bluetooth Mesh bulbs do not fit for every case. One should not use them with wall dimmers, except for the Tunable White model. Also outside they do not suit, excluding the PAR38 bulb with motion sensor.
Bulbs for lamps with several connections, like three-way lamps, are not supported. One heard also aboutmistakes in packaging, where non-Zigbee bulbs were sent instead of Zigbee versions, because the boxes look very alike.
