The Arlo Pro 4 is a wireless security camera, that records video in 2K quality with a wide 130-degree field of view. It offers full-color night vision, dual-band Wi-Fi connection and warnings about motion detection. An interesting feature is that it runs on a lithium polymer Battery, the same kind that one finds in remote controlled planes and drones.
The usual Battery has a capacity of 4800 mAh. According to Arlo, one can expect between three and six months for one charge. While I tested it for almost two weeks, the Battery dropped only by around 5 percent what would point to around seven months of use.
Arlo Pro 4 battery life and easy tips
Even so, the actual output in practice changes much from one camera to another.
Some setups lose around two thirds of one percent daily in the best power-saving mode, that keeps four to five months between charges. Others in the same conditions fall by almost 1 percnet a day and need charging every two months or even more often. I heard about cameras that consume 10 percent a day, what is too fast.
One user saw that its fully charged Battery lasted only five to six days. Even more unusually, some other noticed that the Battery that before lasted 90 days, after a year held only 14 days, and even adding a solar panel could not make up for the slowdown.
The way you set the detection zone matters very much. Limiting the view to only half of the driveway and pavement, one reached 10 to 14 days in the best power-saving mode. But if one includes the whole street in the zone?
The camera died in almost three days. Turning on active zones and using the power-saving setup, one installer improved after a restart. Cold temperatures also heavily affect, because batteries naturally deliver less energy when its freezing.
There is an extended XL Battery version that comes with a separate housing to fit its bigger size. The Arlo Pro 4 Battery works with the Pro 3, 5, Ultra and Ultra 2, simply do not mix XL and standard with them. Also third-party options are available.
One of them expands the capacity to 6500 mAh. One can find also a larger version at 13000 mAh, that promises around two and a half times longer Battery life, what works well for quiet places, barns or areas, where hardly any changes happen. The official backup Arlo Battery costs around 50 dollars at Arlo or Amazon, although cheaper non-Arlo choices commonly receive mixed opinions from users.
When your batteries start to act weird, try the easiest fix first: remove it, wait around a minute, then stick it back inside. Charge it straight from the box before the first use, and you will see a bright reading during the round. One final tip, the Arlo Pro 4 does not truly need a base station to work, although with astation the Battery could last a bit longer.
