The dryer is an easy appliance. Toss your laundry in, push a button, wait for it to dry. Done. You shove wet clothes in, press a button, and an hour later you pull out warm towels. An hour later, you pull out a batch of fresh, dry towels.
This routine depends on flow of air through your ductwork to blow the lint away. As that airflow gets restricted, though, the dryer has trouble removing moisture. Your clothes aren’t getting dry, and machine’s internal temperature rises. If the blockage is significant enough, it can pose a fire hazard. To avoid this danger, it’s important to clean your vent on a regular basis.
How Often to Clean Your Dryer Vent
But how frequently? Many people guess how often they should clean which is poor practice. Some will tell you: only once a year! But that’s with perfect conditions. Your home has more mixed fabrics and probably longer ducts. Therefore, it produces more linty.

How much lint does your dryer produce? That’s the first question to ask. One human, doing three loads per week will create relatively little lint. Four humans doing eight or 10 loads each week creates a lot more fluff.
What do you wash? Some fabrics are far worse than others: towels and cottons really throw off lint. Synthetics is better; they stay put better and generate less lint. Do you have a bunch of fleece and gym clothes? Those’ll create more lint for you to deal with. Depending on the types of fabrics, this affects how fast it collect.
Another variable is pets. If you have cats or dogs, pet hair accumulates on the lint screen and travels down the ductwork. That hair becomes matted around the pipe’s restrictions and bends. Because it doesn’t flow as freely as dry cotton lint, it further restrict airflow. Houses with shedding pets and lots of laundry will need to be cleaned more often then houses that don’t have animals. And the math shows that, reducing intervals if you have pets.
The path the air takes also matters. Ideally, use a short duct that passes directly through an exterior wall. There is not much surface area for lint to accumulate on. Unfortunately, most houses feature longer runs passing through crawl spaces or attics. With multiple turns, or elbows, these ducts increases airflow resistance while causing debris buildup. Every turn results in lost effective airflow. Lint has plenty of hiding spots along a long, winding duct.
Today’s dryers have sensors that catch issues. They look for whether the vent has been obstructed and also whether clothes is still wet. Neither of those are glitches. Those are warning flags and they’re valuable pieces of information. When your dryer tells you it thinks there might be a block in the vent (and then again a month later), it means there already was. You should of never ignore that. The tool prioritizes those warnings because a current blockage is more dangerous than one based off usage alone.
Finally, test your airflow. Is the vent blocked? Test the amount of air coming out right now compared with how much came out before you cleaned it. If the air flow has decreased significantly then the vent is choked. To put it simply: if the vent is choking the dryer will take longer to dry clothes. That’s a good indicator pressure has built up in the duct and it’s time to get it cleaned.
You must clear out dryer vents so that no excess heat builds up in an area full of flammable fabric. Drying safely requires a clear vent. If you have a vent, use the tool to set your starting point. Mark it on your calendar as a reminder. Don’t get so far behind that you notice when the laundry smells like smoke. That’s a red flag you’ve missed by too much.
