What most folks don’t realize is that a flush isn’t just a single event. With moddern toilets, you have an option to flush lightly or fully, and those gallons-per-flush numbers can accumulates quickly.
How Much Water Do Smart Toilets Use
Using the tool, you select your household’s profile (i.e., do you tend to use more of a heavy flush or a light flush). Because this sounds like only a little bit of a difference between big vs. Small flushes, but when you multiply that by how many people is in your household, that weekly disparity becomes huge. It’s a trade-off between performance vs. Efficiency; and the calculator shows what that cost will be.
Because of all the other plumbing components, people assume the bidet will use an enormous amount of water, but that’s typically incorrect. As settings for both flow rate and wash time show, a 25 second wash require fewer gallons than a single flush. Linger longer and the tally will go up, but it won’t get near flush water in most cases.
More than anything else, household size determine water consumption; a single additional occupant will add much more to your base load. By default, calculator factors this in. This means that technology (the fixture) has little effect on bottom line over time, while occupancy is far more important.
And then there’s water used in auto-clean cycles. You don’t know when those run. They might happen while you are out, or during your sleep if you have an overnight mode. Each one is very small (maybe eight hundredths of a gallon), but there are typicaly seven per week. That adds up to almost half a gallon a day. Over a month, that is enough water to fill standard bucket. And the tables breaks it down by flow and runtime. Little things add up fast, too… It’s more about total impact of minor inefficiencies than any individual splash.
The calculator has a common trap called “smart toilet seat.” This happens if someone has retrofitted their old toilet that way. Even though there’s no replacement toilet bowl, it’s still using lots of water because the flush volume of the bowl itself is what matters most. A few extra gallons from all those smart bits doesn’t change that; you’ll want to check toilet’s own label and find its correct profile.
So yes, we want to size smart tech right. We’re not shaming smart tech. For example, an ultra-low flush might not be ideal in a big house. The bowl will get dirtier faster which requires more flushes and creates more waste.
What’s the sweet spot? Reasonable wash times and moderate flush volumes provides the best balance between comfort and conservation.
