Rated hours are fan-run hours. A 4,380-hour filter lasts about 438 days at 10 hours per day before load, ACH, and prefilter adjustments.
ACH uses CADR and room volume. The calculator uses ACH = CADR x 60 / room volume, then compares it with your target ACH to adjust filter loading.
Prefilters extend main-filter life. Cleaning the prefilter reduces hair and coarse dust reaching the HEPA media, so the model increases effective hours.
Smoke is treated as a heavy load. Particle filters and carbon filters can lose useful performance faster when smoke or odor exposure is frequent.

For example, most manufacturers rate their filter for 12 months, so most of us change them seasonally (twice per year), following a calendar different than a use-based schedule.
