Measure wall by wall: A rectangle estimate is fast, but extra wall runs are where alcoves, returns, and bump-outs become visible in the final piece count.
Separate deductions: Door and closet openings should be clear no-trim widths. Do not subtract casing width unless the baseboard truly stops there.
Watch short pieces: Many closets, outside corners, and stair returns can raise waste even when the total perimeter looks modest.
Plan scarf locations: Put scarf joints away from eye-level focal points and add the joint waste before rounding to whole pieces.
