How Often You Need to Empty Your Robot Vacuum

So there is this thing called the “usable fill percentage” in the calculation model. Setting your safe fill limit at eighty percent or less provide a buffer for these unexpected overflow situations where the robot trips its sensor midway through cleaning. What happens then? When you open the lid, it seems like the bin is half empty. However, the sensor only care about how much space is taken up and whether air can flow freely. That’s why dialing down that percentage impacts your emptying schedule so much.
The amount of material that’s being picked up per pass also vary based off the type of floor it’s sitting on. Because hard surfaces enable the dust to slide right into the vacuum’s intake, the volume stays pretty compact and consistent. For carpets (particularly thick carpet), you’ll need to use a heavier hand with both brushing and suction so they can gets all the fluff out before it goes into the can. This causes the volume of what’s realy the same amount of dirt to appear larger.

The other kicker is that long hair/fur strands can easily tangle up your brush rolls and clog your intake which poses a problem for pet owners. Although the auto-empty docks helps some, the transfer system isnt flawless. There’s always some kind of junk leftover in the robot’s bin after every emptying. And that junk accumulates over time, creating a foundation layer of debris that shorten the dock bag life span.
Dock bags, too, will have their own shelf life depending on how much crap gets tracked into the home. For example, if you have more than one pet, or just live in a dusty house, the dock bag interval will be reduced drasticly vs. A clean-bedroom-only scenario. Expecting this helps avoid any nasty surprises from the machine telling you that it requires service earlier then expected.
