Throw some clothes in. Wait. Cross your fingers that it diminishes a bit. Hope’s no replacement for capacity planning though. There is no way to know whether you should stuff too much fabric in washer’s drum or run it half empty. This is hard if you don’t know how many loads of laundry your home generate.
How to Calculate Your Weekly Laundry Loads
Yes, the people in the home matter (it all starts there), but also the clothes on their backs. One outfit per person each day: That’s what most people think. In fact, you’ll see when you start plugging your information into the calculator that the math get interesting. Sleepwear, workout clothes, and work uniforms all add hidden volume to how much laundry you’re creating. This average takes those additional layers into consideration, asking you to plug in an estimate.
Load count also considers towels and bedding. Bedding is dense stuff; a single bath towel could weigh a pound or more, and bedding sets are even denser. And towels don’t take up much shelf space. But they are bulky and heavy. Washing multiple beds worth of sheets once a week equals two to three loads right there, no matter how many clothes you have. Often it’s these things; towels and bedding, that determine if a load is full so the tool takes their weight into account separately. Maybe you have enough room for your t-shirts, but then when you add a comforter the physics change. Weight matter, not just item count.
Then there’s sorting. Some folks sort into several pile: whites, colors, delicates, heavy things. Other people just toss everything in together. This habit is included in multiplier in the calculator. More piles mean more partial loads. A tiny load of white socks doesn’t take up space in washer, but if you launder it on its own, that’s considered a load too. So yes, you will run more cycles if you sort everything very carefully compared to someone who just throws it all in together, even though you might be washing the exact same weight. It is a compromise. Wash-care or efficiency?
Finally, there’s those extras. You know, there is sports equipment, pet blankets, and baby clothes. They add a different kind of weight but they don’t fit neatly into your standard clothing model. The pet blanket gets used every day and has to be washed regularly. The baby clothes are small, but oh man, you go through a lot of them! This doesn’t map well onto a typical “clothes” model, so the tool uses some sort of change to account for this. It recognizes that laundry isn’t just about your pants and your shirts; it’s about what actualy happens in a household.
The last anchor is washer capacity. If you have a big capacity front loader in your suburban home, you’ve got a very different ceiling compared to that smallish machine in your studio apartment. By default, the calculator sets the practical dry weight limit so you don’t overload the drum. Washing with an overloaded drum is not efficient and can harm the machine. Underloading won’t do much good since you’ll be wasting both energy and water. Finding the sweet spot between having a full load without packing it in is what we’re after.
It’s a planning tool for the week. If you know how many loads you have ahead, you can space them out. How should I space those? Do I want to get a big load on Saturday? Or maybe break it up through the rest of the week? It takes away that worry about the growing laundry piles. It stops being a “reactive” laundry thing and becomes a “managed” laundry thing.
Doing laundry is nothing more than math with clothes on it. When you learn how heavy your habits are, doing the laundry each week become predictable. You no longer guess. You plan. You can fit X amount of stuff into the washing machine. That means the pile by the front door never gets out of control. It should of been easier to calculate.
