Heat pump water heaters are also commonly called hybrid electric water heaters. They operate ultra-well. This type of devices looks like average water heaters, but they work totally different.
Stand-alone air-source heat pump water heaters take heat from the surrounding air and move it to warm water in the tank. That motion happens at higher temperature. The heat pump operates like a refrigerator in reverse.
How Heat Pump Water Heaters Work
It reaches up to four times bigger efficiency than normal water heaters. Because it takes heat from the air around, it uses fewer energy to warm water. Those devices do not give off nothing locally and reduce greenhouse gases.
You can buy stand-alone heat pump water heating system as one whole. It stores integrated water tank and back-up resistance heating elements. The electrical elements mean to switch the heat pump and use it as usual electric water heaters.
You can use them together with the pump for hybrid function. In that rule the heat pump actuates only until some amount of warm water uses. Almost all heat pump water heaters are hybrids with traditional rule.
You can set it to operate as normal electric water heaters. That mode does not take heat from the room. It is less efficient, but more practical in very cold weather.
The first cost of heat pump water heaters depend on several factors. They are the unit you buy, the time for installation and the incentive that you qualify for. Size and brand affects the initial price.
Heat pump water heaters cost between $1,200 for 50-gallon tanks to $2,500 for 80-gallon tanks of the best makers. You can look at various models to find energy saving option. Some models have WiFi-connection, touch screen and glass-lined tanks.
Installation requires careful plan. The warm and cold lines must be vertically separated, so replacing gas or electric water heaters require to care about rework. Those units produce condensate.
So a drain line to floor drain or to outside is needed. 50-gallon heater requires 700 to 900 square feet of free space for indoor use. Some people find that heat pump give side-effect of fresh, dry air.
It also dehumidifies during the whole year. In the summer it cools freeofcharge.
