SimpliSafe is made up of home security systems that remove the hassle with tangled cables during setup. Rather than depend on a usual phone line, it connects with you and the monitoring service by means of mobile net. More than stopping intruders from entering, the setup also warns you about water moisture, cold temperatures and risks of carbon monoxide.
The base station forms the main part of the whole system. It arrives with four NiMH rechargeable batteries already loaded, directly from the box. When connected to electricity, it automatically resets those batteries fully.
SimpliSafe Battery Backup and Simple Battery Tips
In case of power outage, they can back the function for up to 24 hours. Because they are made to be rechargeable and lasting you almost never will need replacements.
For swapping the Battery Backup batteries, use sticks with rechargeable NiMH (that is the design of the system). Using other kinds of batteries could really damage the device. I found reports of users that say that 2500mAh batteries extended teh Battery Backup time to almost 54 hours, which does beat the usual one-day limit.
Even so, when power outages last more than 24 hours, things become difficult. One way is to have a ready group of fully charged NiMH AA 1.2V batteries, to swap them when the original ones empty. Another option: use a portable power bank with around 25,000mAh, that gives USB output of 5 volts at 0.5 amps, and it would work for Battery Backup power of the base station.
When the system switches to Battery Backup mode, it keeps only minimal energy. The keyboard no longer accepts orders, but the app on your phone will knot work during that period. Also, it switches to internal mobile Battery Backup link as extra protection.
To restore the base station to factory settings, unplug the AC adapter and remove the Battery Backup battery from its slot.
For the outdoor cameras, there is a special Battery Backup battery that resets in around five hours. The battery of the second generation outdoor camera usually lasts three months before needing a recharge, but that depends on your settings, the place of setup and how often it records. On the other hand, there is a weird problem: some outdoor cameras become unresponsive after reconnecting or changing batteries.
There are black rechargeable batteries for those cameras in stores like Lowe’s, so that they work during 24/7.
Almost everything except the base station, the wired internal SimpliCam, the Smart Alarm internal camera and the smart lock. So all other Gen3 devices from Simplisafe, need batteries, that you will have to later swap. Here is the thing: many devices come with old included batteries.
For instance, I saw a siren bought in start of 2025 that had alkaline batteries from 2021, and they lasted only six months. Best to replace all the AA batteries that are pre-installed in your Simplisafe devices, as soon as you open the packages. Simplisafe also provides free Battery Backup batteries fordetectors of carbon monoxide, when you need them.
