The Echo Dot does not carry an internal Battery. It requires to stay connected to electrical power always. If one removes it from the power source, the device simply will turn off.
All present models of Amazon Echo require exterior energy, and none of them has a built-in Battery for long portable usage. They come with adapter for the electricity or USB cable and one must plug them in so that they operate.
Echo Dot needs power, use a battery base to make it portable
Even so, bases with Battery exist, that changes everything. Such base allows you to use your Echo Dot freely, without need to plug it to the wall. Imagine the freedom to bring Alexa to a barbecue in the garden or even while camping.
After a full charge, you can disconnect it and lay it where you want, as long as the Wi-Fi works. The Battery will last for several hours.
It is possible to choose Battery bases for the Echo Dot of the 4th and 5th generations as one of the most liked. It has a built-in Battery, that gives up to five hours of constant listening. Even so, it does not work for other versions of the Echo Dot or for the bigger Amazon Echo.
The base weighs little, is strong and gives a nice look too the device. Mission Accessories offer a model with lithium-ion Battery, that also gives around five hours of listening for the 4th generation Echo Dot.
For owners of the 3rd generation Echo Dot, options exist. One of them delivers 5,200 mAh capacity with eight hours of listening. It loads fully in three and half hours.
At half of volume, that results in eight hours of usage. The solid build ensures, that the speaker does not suffer and the sound stays good. Interestingly, the version with 10,400 mAh weighs actually less than that with 5,200 mAh, whichsurprises.
Thanks to a portable Battery, the Echo Dot is useful for festivals, camping, terraces, bathrooms and cars. You can also connect it by Bluetooth to other devices, where outlets lack.
Some use their Echo Dots in road trips. The power use is little on batteries, when one plugs in to a backed outlet. The 5th generation Echo Dot uses around 1.3 watts in standby mode.
A bank with 10,000 mAh would give about 36.5 hours of standby mode, if one assumes 95 percent of cable efficiency.
Another clever idea is to combine the Echo Dot with a Bluetooth speaker, that also serves as a power reserve. One setup included tying a JBL Charge speaker to the Echo Dot by Bluetooth, while the Echo Dot received energy through the USB of the speaker. That mix lasted around 18 hours, which is really impressive.
One could simply carry it the whole day and plug back in overnight.
